The Garrahand is a recent addition to my set up.
It is a hybrid cross between a Hang drum, Thumb piano and steel drum.
It has an internal mic and can mount on a cymbal stand which makes it
really practical to add to any set up. It can also sit in a small
cloth ring, like a Tabla or Udu. It is basically a hollow metalic
tongue drum with seven notes arranged around the top circular playing
surface.
For me it is the perfect shape and size to
employ Ghatam, Udu and Tabla techniques on. The notes are
actually tuneable with tiny little magnets inside the instrument. (The
top part comes off to enable this tuning process if required).
The instrument can also be used with a second
instrument which then really opens up potential to orchestrate hand to
hand patterns in a similar way to the I'mbera or thumb piano.
Garrahand is originally from Argentina but you can
visit them at

developments.
